Time to Celebrate — 200 Years!

M.E. Cooper

Updated: Jan 11

This year is the 200th anniversary of a significant event in Canadian history. In 1825, under the direction of Peter Robinson, 2024 impoverished Irish citizens emigrated to Canada, and approximately 2000 members of the group were relocated in the Peterborough, Ontario area. Although their plight in Ireland and the challenges that they faced during their journey and early years in Canada cannot be discounted there is much to celebrate. By any measure, one could say that this emigration experiment or scheme has been a success with numerous positive outcomes. Not only did the first arrivals carve out a living in agriculture and business, there are many descendants who have carried on those traditions successfully and there are those who have gained international recognition for their accomplishments in the arts, entertainment, sports, and many other endeavours.

Events to mark this 200th anniversary have been planned throughout the Peterborough area, as well as in Ireland. I will provide contact information/links for planned celebratory events below and welcome receiving any additions that readers wish to forward to me.
