On 1 August, 2025, a ten-day Bicentennial Celebration of the 1825 Peter Robinson emigration experiment began in Peterborough, Ontario. The Nine Ships organizing committee arranged a busy, successful schedule of events for each day ranging from walking/graveyard tours and author presentations to a fabulous outdoor theatre production entitled 'Wild Irish Geese'.
On a side note, part way through the evening performance that I attended, a flock of geese arose from the nearby field of reeds and brush and flew honking away into the night!
During the week, a Market Hall in which tables with various merchandise, including my book The Peter Robinson Experiment, and displays were arranged. My neighbouring merchants and I welcomed many, many visitors, both local and international, to the Hall. We enjoyed feeling like ambassadors for the celebration! The displays informed visitors about the local sites of historic interest such as Lang Village, the Museum and Archives, and the Hope Mill. Information about the emigrants' voyage, as well as resources to assist visitors with identifying and learning about their connections to the people who completed that arduous journey were provided. It was a memorable commemoration!
